The very first time you are taking any new physical fitness class could be intimidating. Pilates provides an abundance of advantages to the human body, regardless of your physical fitness history.

Though there are a few ways to practice Pilates whether it be by using a mat or a reformer bed, you can expect the results and improved endurance to be the same.

What is Pilates, anyhow?

Pilates is just a type of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscle tissue while increasing posture alignment and balance. Pilates techniques tend to a target the core, even though the exercises work other areas of your body as well. You can certainly do Pilates with or without equipment but no real matter what, expect the moves to include slow, precise movements and breath control. “Pilates is a full body exercise that may help you do everything better by strengthening your core and foundation.

Is Pilates right for me?

The only way to know if Pilates is right for you is by first checking with your doctor and then trying a class. It is recommended that you take a class with a trained professional before attempting a Pilates class on your own. You are going to feel your muscle tissue burn during class, and you’ll find most of the time you will be sore the next day. Just start with the basics as Pilates can get pretty intense at times. Depending on if you have limits such as trouble with your knees or back, your instructor should recommend different movements to make it less painful on those particular areas.

Breathing is an important tool in Pilates practice. For each movement there is a breathing technique that should be used. There is an inhale and exhale approach which allows air into the sides of the ribs and out of the rib cage. This should be slow not forceful. Another reason we direct the breath into the sides of the ribs is to prevent shallow breathing into the upper chest. This will cause neck and shoulder muscles to tense.
